The SEIU Local 503 Board has funded up to 35 full scholarships for the LERC (Labor Education and Research Center) Summer School and 5 full scholarships for the Summer Institute for Union Women (SIUW). Both of these programs have traditionally been great leadership development opportunities for union members, and they are a wonderful way to build solidarity between various unions.
The deadline is fast approaching! Applications must be received by SEIU Local 503 by May 12 to be considered for a General Fund scholarship.
The LERC Summer School will be held from August 7 through August 9 in Eugene on the University of Oregon campus. Every year, SEIU Local 503 sponsors a number of SEIU members for this popular University of Oregon/LERC summer training. This year’s classes include:
- To Organize and Fight: Building The Union During Troubled Times
- Bargaining to Raise Standards: Traditional and Nontraditional Collective Bargaining Strategies
- Effective Teaching and Facilitation Techniques
There will also be workshops around Workers’ Comp, Fair Representation, Grievances, and Social Media.

The AFL-CIO Summer Institute for Union Women (SIUW) is scheduled in Portland on the campus of Reed College from June 23 through June 27. The Institute celebrates the solidarity of union women across boundaries of age, race, and nation, and it brings us together for skill building, education and fun. Workshops and plenary sessions examine current issues, ranging from politics, to health care, to international solidarity. Cultural events and workshops add richness to the Institute and inspire us to creativity in our union work.
