SEIU 503 members have a voice in who is hired to work at our union through our Staff Screening Committee. Eight rank and file members plus our Executive Director, Heather Conroy, make up the Staff Screening Committee. Our Staff Screening Committee reviews resumes, conducts initial screening interviews, and creates a pool of candidates that our staff leadership team draws upon when hiring new organizers.
Local 503 of the Service Employees International Union seeks a seasoned and articulate communications director who is a skilled writer experienced in strategic communications and media relations. Applicants should be well versed in using traditional and new media for external and internal messaging, ready to lead a full-service communications department and able to navigate the complexities of a diverse organization with over 50,000 members and a range of allies. The demonstrable ability to exercise judgment and discipline in responding to the opportunities and demands of today’s 24-hour news cycle and a proven commitment to progressive causes are essential. Application and hiring process for internal and external organizer positions
1. Submit your cover letter and resume to email@example.com for our Staff Screening Committee. The Staff Screening Committee reviews resumes monthly to determine which candidates will be offered interviews. If you are approved for an interview, you will receive an email letting you know. You will be contacted at a future date to schedule an interview.
2. Next is the Staff Screening interview. Our Staff Screening Committee conducts interviews once a month. Interviews are held in person or by Skype, depending on your geographic location. The committee will make a determination on whether or not to approve you for our candidate pool.
3. If you pass staff screening, you will receive an email notice that you are approved for hire, and your name will be added to our candidate pool.
4. Once in our candidate pool, our staff leadership team has access to your cover letter and resume and may contact you for a second interview and reference checks as organizer positions become available.
The application and hiring process for other positions at SEIU 503 varies and will be posted on our website when openings occur.
NOTE: Resumes and/or interview candidates who do not pass Staff Screening may resubmit a cover letter and resume 12 months after their previous application.
