Cottage Grove Workers 28th SEIU 503 Unit

A large majority of workers at the Coast Fork Nursing Center in Cottage Grove designated SEIU 503 by card check, making the Prestige home in Lane County the 28th Oregon nursing facility represented by the local.

State Sen. Frank Prozanski presided over the card count, in which 34 of the 43 eligible workers at the home chose to form a union with Local 503. Coast Fork workers Sarah Cook, Jennifer Clark, Danielle Goins, and Jamie Pilson led a strong organizing committee guided by member organizers Andrew Lucus from South Hills Rehab and Judy Byers from Evergreen-Windsor as well as staff organizers Aaron Giesa and Andrew Barnes.

The workers said they were most motivated by a desire for fairness and respect in the workplace—a resolve evidenced by the fact that a majority of the workers signed cards within an hour of the first one.
