Investment bankers are spending millions to try to keep Oregon's minimum corporate income tax at $10, but they are up against different kind of bankers: SEIU 503 phone bankers.

Unable to match the fiscal resources of banks and big business, union members and allies have made more than 50,000 calls to members and voters urging a YES vote on Measures 66 & 67 in January.

More than 150 different volunteers have gathered at union offices around the state this month to call voters in the name of tax fairness, quality services and stronger communities.

A yes vote on the measures, which raise the minimum tax to $150 on most corporations and marginally increase taxes for households with over $250,000 in annual income, will preserve $733,000 in services for education, public safety and vulnerable Oregonians between now and 2011. If the measures are defeated, the Legislature would be forced to seek draconian cuts to rebalance the 2009-11 budgets.

Volunteers from organizations such as Stand for Children and progressive legislators like Reps. Peter Buckley (above with members in Medford), Betty Komp and Phil Barnhart have joined SEIU 503 members on phone banks.
