What We Won through Political Action

What did we win through political action by members?

Building on Success and Moving Forward

Raise Your Voice. You have a story to tell and a role to play. Front-line workers led the fight and made the difference.

Voting for Workers Harder for Some

Our union is an issue-based organization in a very partisan political setting. Workers lobby Democrats and Republicans; Republican legislators faced a tough challenge this session.

Governor Stands Up for Working Families

This session the Governor came through for us. He signed Executive Orders recognizing the right to organize for 12,000 child care providers and 3,700 adult foster care providers.

Political Action Leads to Contract Victories

Four Workers

Four workers display their purple attitude at a march.

Our contract victories started when we worked to elect pro-worker legislators. Members lobbied hard for adequate funding for contracts. The work electing pro-worker legislators and lobbying paid off: workers won wage increases and health care.

Largest Expansion of Bargaining Rights Since 1973

The 2007 Legislature gave workers a voice at work with bargaining rights for child care workers and adult foster care workers, and new legislation allowing public employees to form unions through majority sign-up.

Legislators Were Graded

Legislators were graded on their support for SEIU issues. Higher grades were given for  introducing bills, testifying in support, and pushing fellow legislators.

Members Tell Their Stories, Workers Win

Care providers fought hard for improved quality of care for their clients and improved working conditions. In the end they made their voices heard.

University Workers Score Big Wins

OUS workers saw huge gains. Our workers' fight for improvements to facilities and staffing resulted in changes that will bolster our public universities.

LERC Funding Secured

The Labor Education and Research Center at the University of Oregon teaches rank and file union members leadership skills. LERC had been cut substantially.

Human Services Still Fighting for Funding

Barbara Casey

One of our toughest fights was to improve the quality of care for abused and neglected kids. Members at the Department of Human Services protect kids in danger.

Eastern OR Training Center Remains Open

Eastern OR Training Center

Eastern OR Training Center

The Eastern Oregon Training Center is a residential facility in Pendleton for 40 adults with severe disabilities. Members are proud of the impact on their patients’ lives and the benefit to their community.

Payday Loans Gouge Consumers

High-interest loans devastate low-income families. Payday loans, gouging consumers with 500% interest, have trapped working families into spiraling and sometimes inescapable debt.

Health Care Priority for Pro-Worker Legislature

Legislative leadership set the tone for health care issues. Six committees were established to focus on various aspects of health care. Two discussions rose to the top.
